After Cataract Surgery
What You Can Expect Following Cataract Surgery
Following your post-op instructions after your cataract surgery is the most important step to a smooth recovery. This usually involves eye drops and ample rest for your eyes. We will schedule a follow-up appointment with you so our cataract specialists can check that your eyes are healing properly.
You may notice your vision becoming clearer in as little as a few hours, and most patients see improvements in their eyes within two weeks. It usually takes about a month to fully heal following cataract surgery.
What Happens the Day of Your Surgery?
We will give you a protective eye cover to use when sleeping. Since your vision may be a little blurry immediately after surgery, make sure you have a friend or family member drive you home.
At home, be sure to rest your eyes and avoid any screen time that can irritate your eyes. You may experience the sensation that something is in your eye, but this is completely normal.
Your symptoms will subside in the days following your surgery.
What Does Post-Op Care Look Like?
The aftercare for cataract surgery is relatively simple, and you should be able to resume most activities the day after your procedure. While you can work on the computer, watch TV and shower the day after surgery, be sure you are being mindful of any stress you are putting on your eyes. Follow these tips on how to keep your eyes protected throughout your recovery.
- Wear sunglasses and avoid bright lights.
- Don’t engage in strenuous exercise until after your first post-op appointment.
- Be careful to avoid bumping into objects that could harm your eyes.
- Don’t swim within the first week following surgery.
- Stay away from things that could irritate your eyes, like dust and grime.
- Don’t use makeup, lotion or soap near your eyes for a few days after surgery.
- Do not rub your eyes!
